My Skincare Routine

For around a year now I have sworn by Tom Ford’s grooming range, using multiple products on a daily basis. However, recently I found that for some reason my skin had changed and the products were leaving me feeling like a total oil slick - it was time for a change.

I put out a call on Twitter for suggestions and you guys came through! My mate, and fellow blogger Robbie suggested I gave Kiehl’s a try, after hearing him rave about them I thought it was time to give them a go and see how they work for me. I believe if you go into a Kiehl’s store you can get a full consultation in which they tell you what products you should use for your skin type. Sadly we don't have a Kiehl’s anywhere near where I live, so I thought I’d risk it and give a few products a try, I picked them all up from House of Fraser. I obviously love them, which is why I thought I would let you know which products I have been using over the past few weeks. Here’s how my current skincare routine stands…

Kiehl's enegrising face wash | mens grooming blogger

Step one

The first step goes one of two ways, either wash or scrub. Every other day I use a scub on my face to give it just a bit of a deeper clean, the rest of the week I use a daily wash. Currently the scrub I am using is the Kiehl’s Exfoliating Cleanser, it’s from their Age Defence range and gives you a ‘refreshed and younger looking appearance’ so I must look about 3 months old once I’ve used it. The wash I am using is from their Facial Fuel range - the Energising Face Wash is a gel cleanser that I tend to use in the mornings. It leaves you feeling fresh and ready to start the day, it also smells pretty good too!

Step two

After cleansing my face, I then use toner - currently I am using the Ultra Facial Oil-Free Toner. I decided to choose the oil-free one as I have quite combination skin, so I didn’t want to end up with a mirror-like forehead from the oil. I’ve been really impressed with it, it leaves my face feeling tight and fresh.

Step three

Once the toner has dried nicely on my face I use the Eye Alert cream. it’s a really nice thick gel that helps to reduce puffiness and dark circles - it’s super refreshing, but I tend to only really use it in the mornings as I find it helps to wake me up a bit easier (only a bit). I also use the Facial Fuel No-Shine Lip Balm - it’s great for keeping your lips from drying out, but also won’t make it look like you’ve put lip gloss on, it’s also got a super fresh mint flavour.

Step four

The final step of my daily routine is the super-famous Ultra Facial Cream - it now comes with Factor 30 which is massively important to wear on your face every day, and is a nice thick day cream moisturiser. I think most people that use Kiehl’s use the Ultra Facial Cream, it’s a 24-hour moisturiser that doesn't sit heavy on the skin at all, I would highly recommend it!

So far I am loving the Kiehl’s products, they work a treat on my skin and don't cost a tonne either. Big thanks to Robbie and everyone else that recommended I check out the Kiehl’s brand, if you haven't already I would highly suggest checking them out!

Pearly Whites

I get quite a bit of blogger mail, and a lot of it doesn't make the mark to be put up on the blog - I only ever want to share products I fully endorse with you lot. Last week I took delivery of a rather posh package, inside a black box emblazoned with Bruzzoni

Guest: Beard Styles for Gentlemen

We’re in a world where your style and fashion choices get noticed on nearly a daily basis. Depending on your social activity, work schedule, and just how often you go outside, it has become a normal part of our day to day. You can’t tell me you’ve never noticed anything about someone’s choice in fashion. Either way we’re here to talk about bearded gentleman and some of the great styles that suit them well. These styles may not suit you specifically, but you might
find something you like. Of course a beard could just go with anything, but what about styles that really make a great beard stand out?

The Lumbersexual This niche style goes great with a beard. It’s almost required to be a lumbersexual. Typically found with plaid clothing, jeans, and sometimes straps to hold your pants up. The lumbersexual is a great look to sport time to time. Now that we’re currently in the winter months it makes it the perfect time to find you some suitable clothing and give this style a try. You may just spark a hidden flame In your “special other” that you didn’t know where there before.

Some other features to note about this style:

  • The hair is usually a mid-length to shorter cut.
  • Pairs well with lean or muscular guys.
  • Plaid is the key element of the look.
  • Ripped jeans are a plus.

The Hipster

There’s some back and forth discussion about the hipster look. Some people don’t like the look, but from what I’ve found its typically because of the way some guys try to pull it off. They tend to make it a “I’m better than you” look which often is a part of their attitude and personality. There’s a couple key features to help pull this look off. A great pair of sunglasses or even clear glasses paired with a fit button up shirt, dressy vest, khaki pants, and even a fedora if you can pull it off.

The look changes to keep up with latest trends. Here’s the more exact definition of hipster: “a person who follows the latest trends and fashions, especially those regarded as being outside the cultural mainstream.” Another key aspect of being hipster is maintaining your body hair . You’ll always noticed a very clean appearance in this style. Nice sharp hair lines, beard lines, and if shirtless a great manscaped appearance.

It’s All Business
As we see beards become more mainstream you’ll see them more frequently in the work place. Finally, businesses are starting to loosen up a little with requiring men to shave their facial hair. With this moving trend, we’re going to see a lot more business fashion with bearded gentleman. One of my favorite looks is a well-fitting dark suit, only a watch accessory, and a beard that’s ponytailed down. This does require a longer beard, but it’s one of my most favorite bearded styles.

What’s Your Favorite?
There’s of course many more styles out there to choose from. Which ones are your favorite to see guys with beards wearing? I hope you enjoyed this article and please share you thoughts with a comment below. I’d love to see what some of you think and your own personal favorite styles.

Why I gave up wet shaving!

I’m often asked for advice and comment from readers as well as different publications that want my input. Recently I had an email from a reader that asked about shaving and what I recommend when wet shaving. It was then that I started to change how I shave.

I probably have to shave around three times a week, and as I have mentioned in a few other blog posts, I have quite sensitive skin meaning I need to be careful what I use, as well and when and how it’s used.

Philips OneBlade Pro Review | Sam Squire uK Male fashion blogger

I was always big on wet shaving, I like to be clean shaven at all times as it just suits me better. I started to find that actually, wet shaving wasn't working for my skin, I have a shelf full of products I have tried but for whatever reason, I was always getting cuts, irritation or breakouts from it so a couple of months’ ago I decided to pack it in altogether.

Now, I never tend to react much to marketing, however, when I saw Philips advertising their new OneBlade on Facebook I really took note of what they were saying. It’s marketed as a new way to trim, edge and shave…both wet and dry. It doesn't look like a foil razor, and it doesn't look like a standard wet shave razor…it looked completely different and I thought it was worth a try.

Philips OneBlade Pro Review | Sam Squire UK Male Fashion & Lifestyle blogger

I did my research before buying and Philips really seemed to go on a sponsored post offensive to get the product out there, when I fished my way through the ‘I’m paid to say this is fantastic’ posts, I found one of a normal guy trying it out, the results were really impressive!

I opted for the OneBlade Pro - this comes with a slightly different body, a 14-length cutter guide a battery indicator light and the 4-month replaceable blade.

So how have I got on? I don’t tend to use the cutter guide as I like a shave to be as close as possible, and I have to say I have found it quite impressive, it cuts really close using a blade that slices at a ridiculously fast speed, meaning no hairs are missed. The double-edged blade means whether going up or down, you’ll be cutting the hair in both directions.

You can use this wet or dry, as I don’t wet shave anymore, I have found that even just dry shaving with this gives you a really close shave and leaves you feeling smooth. it charges quick and I have been getting around a month’s charge out of it, which is pretty impressive! Overall, I am really impressed, I think I paid under £50 for this in Boots (click here to buy), I love the fact you only need to buy a new blade every 4 months which really helps to cut the cost of your shave.

If you’re unsure of what shave would suit you best, I’d recommend the OneBlade, that way whether it’s wet or dry, you’ll be able to use it to suit you in the best possible way! For more info on OneBlade, click here to check out the Philips website!

Say it with a Letterbox Gift!

So something new dropped through the door this week from a company called Letterbox Gifts - they’re actually a pretty awesome company and I love the concept of what they do.

letterboxgiftshop.com | Gift ideas for men | Sam squire uk male fashion blogger

You head to their website letterboxgiftshop.com and pick the gift you want to send someone - these are all set up in boxes that can be posted…because missing a parcel delivery is possibly the most irritating thing on earth! So, there’s a few different boxes you can pick from including the Mother’s Day box, The Tea box and The Signature box, the one I received was The Gentleman’s Box.

The quality of gifts inside is nice, it’s like a little hamper of quality products for men. So, what do you get> Let have a little looky, ey...

Betty & Dodge – English Oak ‘Man Cave’ Key Ring.
Bath House – Cuban Cedar & Lime Wash Bar.
Men’s Society – Handsome Hand Cream.
Willie’s Cacao – Colombian Gold Chocolate Bar.
Fellows Essential Gentleman – Autumn Warmth Beard Oil.

It’s a nice little collection of stuff and it’s all quite traditional and rustic looking. It’s great for a little birthday gift for the man who has everything. The great thing with the service is that you can also have a custom printed message sent to the recipient - this box itself costs £23.95, I’d say that’s a relatively fair amount for the quality of the products that the box contains.

Okay, so my reviews are always honest and there’s a little something I picked up on which I’m not a fan of - the Bath House Cuban Cedar & Lime Wash Bar smells great and is a weighty piece of soap…however, on the ingredients section of the bar it clearly says that the product is not suitable for use by nut allergy sufferers. I myself am horribly allergic to nuts and wouldn't have thought twice about using it as you wouldn't expect a bar of soap to carry a warning like that. I personally would like to see this detailed on letterboxgiftshop.com as you probably don't want to really be sending someone a product that could give them an allergic reaction!
